Margot Robbie is throwing it back to the Nineties for the 2018 Academy Awards. The actress, who this year received her first Oscar nomination for her part in “I, Tonya, ” has been drawing inspiration from Nineties-era supermodels, according to stylist Kate Young.
“This whole press tour we’ve been doing this Nineties supermodel theme, which is really fun in terms of fashion, ” Young said ahead of tonight’s show. “It was originally inspired by that Versace tribute show. There’s a ton of imagery of Carla Bruni and Tatjana Patitz and Claudia Schiffer running around at Met Balls in evening gowns and when you look, they all wear this super minimal Nineties brownish tonal makeup that feels so modern right now.”
Young and Robbie first worked together at the 2016 Oscars, to which Robbie wore a gold metallic Tom Ford dress. For tonight’s look, the two chose a white dress by Chanel, aligning with the Nineties mood they’ve been creating.

“I always want [the Oscars look] to be a little bit grand and a little iconic and something that’ll stand the test of time when you look at that photo in 10 years, ” Young continued. “I don’t want the Oscars dress to ever be a joke. Sometimes we do funny stuff, fashion doesn’t have to always be so serious, but in this case, I think it’s good for it to be a little more serious than usual.”
The stylist said she spent the weekend making “museum visits” in search of the right diamonds to pair with Robbie’s Chanel gown before the final fitting, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.
“These last few months, I don’t know that I’ve ever done so many looks for someone in my entire life, ” said Young, referring to Robbie’s Nineties-inspired press tour looks. “We didn’t get to the point where she was just wearing black turtlenecks and skirts everyday ’cause she couldn’t bear another outfit. She’s working the looks every day — and enthusiastic about it. Like, ‘I wore this and nobody took my picture, we need to find another time for it, ’ which is really as a stylist, that’s like the greatest thing you could ever hear. “Everything is ready, ” Kate Young confirms of the dress that her client Margot Robbie will be wearing to the Oscars this Sunday. “The designer and style were in place about five weeks ago, the colour we confirmed about three weeks ago. This is one dress you do not leave to the last minute.”
Just as the night will be a pivotal moment in Robbie’s career, it will also be a high stakes one for her stylist. Finding the right design house to collaborate with is essential, Young explains, and brands are willing to invest a lot in what could be the winning picture on the front pages of the world’s papers the next day.
. “Designers are willing to make custom things and spend a lot of time and money developing something unique, which wouldn’t be feasible for them to do at any other time.”

“It’s not just a premiere dress that no one will remember. These pictures live for a long time and you have to think about how the dress will stand up in history. Best dressed lists are important, of course I want the dress to be the best there on the night. But also I want it to be the dress that everybody copies for prom, or their wedding, and that everyone remembers ‘that time Margot Robbie wore…’”

“Pacing is very important on a long tour, ” she attests. “You don’t find a great gown and just use it for whatever premiere is next, you hold it back for the best event possible for it. It’s an arc, and you have to plan it and keep it interesting.”

“It is important to me what people think, ” she admits. “I’m ambitious, I care about my work and whether it’s successful. Instagram is harsh, when the [star’s] fans like something it feels really good, but it feels terrible when they hate it. Some of my clients have very vocal fan bases - I get a lot of hate mail before awards shows sometimes, like ‘don’t f**k it up, don’t ruin our queen’.”
“In reality it matters far more to me firstly what my clients think and also what my peers think. I can’t always give the crowd what they want. I’m not gonna dress my clients like princesses and put them in sparkly strapless puffball gowns all the time, just because I know that would please a large segment of the Instagram community. That’s not what I’m hired to do. In some ways I need a bunch of them to hate me, in order for me to have done my job properly.”
Presenting an interesting image has also helped Young’s clients to win big commercial deals over the years - Selena Gomez collaborated with Louis Vuitton and Coach, Portman is a Dior ambassador and Robbie has landed Calvin Klein adverts. Win or lose, after Sunday’s appearance, and under Young’s watch, you can bet there will be a fresh batch of offers on the table for the latter by Monday.
