Will Margot Robbie Be Harley Quinn Again

There are plenty of question marks when it comes to the future of the DCEU at Warner Bros. As the studio retools and reworks its super-powered efforts, they also continue to release new entries in the oft-maligned franchise. But one name that has found a decent amount of success in the DCEU is Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

Robbie's Clown Queen of Crime has become a fan favorite, whether it has been in critical flops like Suicide Squad or more beloved fare like Birds of Prey. Her character has won over audiences, but is one whose future with the franchise remains in doubt.

Quinn has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Joker sequel, but not with Robbie in the role. So, will fans ever see the Wolf of Wall Street actress don the pigtails ever again?

Well, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has made it clear that he loves working with Robbie and has remained one of the actress's biggest fans. So, if Harley Quinn were to make a return to the big screen any time soon Gunn is seemingly going to be the one to make it happen. And if a new tweet of his is to be believed,  he could know a whole lot more than he is leading on.

After being prodded on Twitter about a future for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in the DCEU, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker director James Gunn revealed that, in fact, Harley will be back at some point in the future.

This is not the first time the filmmaker has teased a future for Harley Quinn on the big screen, quoted a few months ago as saying that bringing the villainess back wouldn't be a bad idea.

Robbie has also commented on the idea saying after doing Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back she's now had enough of a break. [is] ready to do her again:

“I did 'Birds of Prey' and 'The Suicide Squad' back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one year period, but that was a while ago now. I’m always ready for more Harley!”

Right now it is unknown where exactly Harley will show up next in the DCEU, but now it has officially been confirmed that she will be back.

Margot Robbie Reacts To Lady Gaga Playing Harley Quinn In Joker 2

One place that would make a lot of sense would be a potential Suicide Squad 3 or Harley-centric Suicide Squad spin-off. Director James Gunn has expressed doing more at DC in the future, and if he were to come back for a feature-length film fans can bet that Ms. Harley Quinn would be a part of it.

And it should be relieving to know that Gunn isn't the only one ready for more from the character. Margot Robbie is just as enthusiastic, making mention that after some time away she is itching to get back into the makeup.

Right now, Lady Gaga is set to play the character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, but after that, the runway is clear for Robbie to make her DCEU return. A major name at DC Comics teased that Margot Robbie might not be done playing Harley Quinn as the DCU looks to its new era.

Margot Robbie Out, Harley Quinn Being Recast?

Robbie boasts as many appearances in the greater DC Universe as almost anybody, having last played her iconic role during 2021's The Suicide Squad under writer/director James Gunn.

Since that time, Gunn took over as the co-CEO of the newly-formed DC Studios, announcing an entirely new slate of projects that will start a brand new era of DC storytelling in theaters and on Max, with some characters confirmed to be recast.

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Comeback Just Got Confirmed

Sharing a GIF of Robbie modeling for a photo shoot in her costume from The Suicide Squad, Palmiotti praised everything James Gunn has brought to the movies while also hinting that great things are coming:

Currently, the only project that will feature Harley Quinn will come with Lady Gaga's portrayal in Joker: Folie à Deux, with Robbie having commented in December 2022 that the Grammy-winner is going to do an amazing job.

Margot Robbie Could Play Harley Quinn Again

James Gunn also debunked a rumor in April pertaining to a prequel series being in development for Robbie's Harley Quinn, which was said to focus on the story of how her need to save the Joker led to her mind being shattered.

It's been quite clear over the last few years that Gunn thinks highly of Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn, with the DC Studios co-CEO telling a fan in March that Robbie would for sure work with him again for a new project.

And while there are no specific projects that seem to be a natural fit for Robbie in Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, Gunn did confirm that more than half of the entire slate remains under wraps, which could include a Harley Quinn return.

Margot Robbie Will Return As Harley Quinn In 'gotham City Sirens'

It's still unclear exactly which recent DC projects will be considered canon under Gunn's new DCU, specifically looking at entries like Peacemaker and Blue Beetle, with Harley Quinn working so closely alongside Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad.

But whether she plays the same version of the character from past movies or a new take on the antiheroine, even with rumors about her being in talks to star in Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four, the door is still open for her to stick with the blue brand. It is unknown which notable DC actors will remain in James Gunn's DCU, but a new update may reveal that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn could be one of them.

As the impending DC reboot is set to take center stage soon, Gunn teased that some characters from the DCEU will still be part of the DCU, most notably Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Sean Gunn's Weasel from The Suicide Squad.

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Character From “suicide Squad” Is Getting Her Own Movie

When a fan asked DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn if he will work again with Margot Robbie, The Suicide Squad filmmaker simply responded by saying, for sure, indicating that a potential new project with the actress is lined up.

It is very possible that Gunn could be hinting at working with Robbie as Harley Quinn again in the new DCU, especially after the visionary director already confirmed that the DC anti-hero would return at some point.

Some would argue that Gunn's past confirmation happened before he took over for DC Studios, but there is still a strong chance that Robbie's Harley Quinn could be one of the big names who will be retained for the DCU.

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Spin Off Movie Gotham City Sirens Will Have A Female Led Cast

DC Studios suggested five DCU superheroes who are the most important characters for the upcoming reboot, and one of them was Harley Quinn. This could strongly tease that the Task Force X member will show up sooner rather than later.

Still, there is also a chance that Gunn is simply confirming that he would be working with Robbie on a future project that is completely unrelated to DC.

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was an important character of the DCEU, and she also became a fan favorite due to the actress' impressive portrayal. As a result, seeing her return in the upcoming reboot would be a welcome sight for everyone.

Assuming that Robbie's Harley Quinn will be retained in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU, then it's possible that the character would make an appearance in Waller due to her strong ties to Viola Davis' titular Task Force X leader.

The Suicide Squad's ending indicated that Bloodsport and Harley could be working together and Elba even teased that he has a really big thing cooking for a DC return.
