Die Kritiken waren alles andere als freundlich: Aggressiv unerträglich anzuschauen, die konfuseste Geschichte des Jahres, kein einziger Moment des spontanen Spaßes oder Humors in diesem langen, schwülstigen Film hieß es, als im August die Comic-Verfilmung Suicide Squad in die Kinos kam.
Auf eines konnten sich die meisten Kritikerinnen und Kritiker jedoch einigen: Margot Robbie als psychopathische Harley Quinn machte ihre Sache ziemlich gut. Im DC-Superhelden-Universum, in dem es wie bei seinem Marvel-Pendant weibliche Hauptfiguren überaus schwer haben, galt Robbie seitdem als Favoritin auf einen eigenen Film. Nach Monaten der Spekulation steht nun fest: Sie kriegt ihn.
Wie der Branchendienst Hollywood Reporter vermeldet, wird Robbie in Gotham City Sirens zu sehen sein. Der Film soll auf der Comic-Reihe Sirens basieren, in der neben Harley Quinn auch Catwoman und Poison Ivy auftreten. Ob die beiden Figuren im Film dabei sind und wer sie spielen wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. Dafür stehen Regie und Produktion: Wie schon bei Suicide Squad wird David Ayer Regie führen. Er und Robbie werden außerdem als Produzenten fungieren.

Für das Drehbuch zeichnet allerdings Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Sherlock Holmes 3, das kommende Tomb Raider-Reboot) verantwortlich. Das in größter Eile von David Ayer geschriebene Skript zu Suicide Squad galt als einer der Hauptgründe für das künstlerische Scheitern des Films. Finanziell war er dennoch ein Erfolg: Mittlerweile hat Suicide Squad rund 745 Millionen US-Dollar eingespielt. Eine Fortsetzung ist deshalb weiterhin in Planung, auch wenn es dafür - ebenso wie für Gotham City Sirens - noch keinen festen Starttermin gibt.
Vor Sirens haben Ayer und Robbie aber eh noch andere Projekte fertigzustellen: Ayer dreht gerade den Fantasy-Thriller Bright mit Will Smith und Joel Edgerton ab. Robbie wird ab Januar 2017 als Eiskunstläuferin Tonya Harding vor der Kamera stehen.

Looking even further, the entire DCEU slate is in a state of flux due to the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, meaning the DCEU’s Harley Quinn could be put on the back burner until things are more settled.
Regardless, seeing Gunn promote Robbie’s anti-hero can only be a good sign as the studio works out the path for the DCEU’s future. While Robbie may currently be on a break from playing this role, there are plenty of fans and professionals out there who hope to see her come without too long of a wait.
