Margot Robbie Movies Peter Rabbit

Dir: Will Gluck; Starring: James Corden, Margot Robbie, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki, Colin Moon (voices), Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, Sam Neill. PG cert, 95 mins

The new Peter Rabbit film could only really be improved with the addition of one thing: unfortunately, it’s myxomatosis. This must be the most bewilderingly tone-deaf adaptation of a beloved children’s book in years – Beatrix Potter’s sylvan fables reduced to something like Mouse Hunt if it had been directed by Richard Curtis.

What

The actual director of Peter Rabbit is an American, Will Gluck, whose previous film was the equally ill-advised 2014 remake of Annie. But those of us still clinging to the memory of Gluck’s superb 2010 high school comedy Easy A, which made an instant star of Emma Stone, know that he is more than capable of working up great comic chemistry on screen with access to the right actors and a range of comedically promising scenarios.

Peter Rabbit 2 The Runaway Movie Features Filming In Gloucester And Stars Margot Robbie And James Corden

Peter Rabbit does in fact feature a handful of both of these things. It’s just that none of them have much to do with Peter Rabbit himself.

This version of Potter’s best known creation is a smart-talking CGI pain-in-the-bobtail, voiced by James Corden, whose supposed tearaway charm is founded on deception, theft, greed and a seemingly pathological anti-human bloodlust. At the start of the film, Peter tries to insert a carrot into the exposed gluteal cleft of Mr McGregor (Sam Neill) while the elderly gardener is tending to his vegetable patch – a jape which ends with McGregor dying of a heart attack.

Peter then gloats to his siblings about having killed the old man before poking the still-warm corpse in the eye to check that he is definitely dead. What I’m trying to say is I have bad news if you were looking forward to the scene in which Peter is sent to bed by his mother with nothing but a mug of chamomile tea for supper.

And besides, this is just the amuse-bouche. Soon enough, along comes McGregor’s nephew Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson), a neurotic London twit who inherits his uncle’s Lake District property and vows to sell it as soon as he can. Peter and his friends don’t much fancy this, so they trash the place, causing Thomas to seek his revenge in turn, with electric fencing and dynamite.

He just has to keep it secret from the rabbits’ number one human ally, his coquettish new neighbour Bea (Rose Byrne) – as in Beatrix, presumably, since her sketches of the animals match Potter’s original watercolour illustrations. She has a longstanding friendship with Peter, his siblings Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki) and Cottontail (Daisy Ridley), and their cousin Benjamin (Colin Moody) – Peter’s official sidekick, who bumps the sisters down to glorified bit parts. But Bea gradually finds a soft spot for Thomas too, which becomes another sticking point in the ongoing man-versus-woodland creature feud.

Gleeson and Byrne actually make for an appealing double act, and their scenes together are fun enough to make you wish that Gluck had ditched the digital animals and made an all-human countryside screwball instead. But that was never the objective here: instead, the film’s only detectable purpose is to somehow horn in on the Paddington racket, but with the wit and warmth of Paul King’s films replaced by rasping sass.

Peter Rabbit Movie: Margot Robbie Sparkles At Premiere

Much fuss has already been made over a sequence in which Peter and friends pelt Thomas with blackberries – to which he is fatally allergic – in the hope of inducing anaphylactic shock. (They succeed, and Thomas has to save himself with an EpiPen.) And it is a horrible scene – not because allergies are comedically untouchable, but because it makes Peter an irredeemably nasty piece of work.

I might have been able to live with the twerking, the auto-tuned songs, the English characters talking about their ”butts”, and the lack of clarity over whether the animals actually care if humans hear them talking or not. Based on the popular fictional story tale by Beatrix Potter, the film production of Peter Rabbit is scheduled to hit theaters on February 9. The new flick follows Peter as he and his gang of furry friends rally together to retrieve their garden back from Mr. McGregor next door.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway Movie Review

Peter Rabbit is a half animated feature/half 3D action film, meaning that although some characters are real-life people — including Domhnall Gleeson as Thomas McGregor, Rose Byrne as Bea, and Sam Neill as Mr. McGregor — others are CGI created animals voiced by some of Hollywood’s best and brightest.

Television host James Corden voiced the title role of Peter Rabbit in the film. Corden, who currently appears as host of The Late Late Show, is also an experienced actor, singer, and performer.

The role of Cottontail, Peter Rabbit’s youngest sister, is voiced by English actress Daisy Ridley. Ridley is most well-known for her role as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She can also be seen in Only Yesterday and Murder on the Orient Express.

Golden Globe nominee Margot Robbie joined the cast as the voice of Flopsy, Peter Rabbit’s awkward sister. Robbie is no stranger to the screen, having appeared in films including Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn , The Legend of Tarzan as Jane Porter, and The Wolf of Wall Street as Naomi Lapaglia.

Most recently, Robbie received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Tonya Harding in the hit film I, Tonya that garnered her Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild nominations.

Voicing the role of Mopsy is Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki. Mopsy is Peter Rabbit’s oldest sister who is known for being quite stubborn.

Like many of the film’s other actors, Debicki has a long list of credits herself. She appeared in critically acclaimed films such as The Great Gatsby, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and The Cloverfield Paradox which was recently released on Netflix.

English comedian Matt Lucas voiced the role of Benjamin Bunny, Peter Rabbit’s clumsy cousin. His character has a long history himself, having had a novel by the title of The Tale of Benjamin Bunny written by Porter in 1904.

Nine-time Grammy Award nominee Sia is the voice of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, the garden's beloved hedgehog. Although she has been heard on the soundtrack of many films, this was one of Sia’s first times acting in a leading role.
