The glorious dream of Margot Robbie leading a band of lady pirates is now dead. The actress told Vanity Fair that her female-led take on Pirates of the Caribbean with Birds of Prey

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it, ” Robbie said.

Margot Robbie To Star In New Female Fronted 'pirates Of The Caribbean' Movie

The project was first announced back in 2020, along with another separate reboot. In May 2022, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies, told The Sunday Times that the projects were still in development. What happened in between then and Robbie’s recent statement is unclear — nor is the fate of the second project.

Bringing pirate media like Black Sails (and, yes, Pirates of the Caribbean) back into the zeitgeist. But even despite that, it’s sad to see the project shoved into Davy Jones’ locker, because a female-forward interpretation of the swashbuckling franchise is the absolute perfect evolution for it.

Most people remember Johnny Depp’s roguish Jack Sparrow, but one thing that made the original three Pirates of the Caribbean movies stand out was just how female-centric it was for a big fantasy genre film. By making governor’s daughter Elizabeth Swann such a central character, the filmmakers — whether intentionally or not — made the movies appeal specifically to young girls. After all, it’s Elizabeth who goes on the clear hero’s journey, from kidnapped damsel to stowaway sailor and eventually Pirate King.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 With Margot Robbie, Cancelled

Without ever intending it, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies became the ultimate girlhood fantasy. Admittedly, there weren’t a whole lot of other women for Elizabeth to fight alongside, but that just makes a new Pirates movie centered around some badass ladies the natural next step. Instead of leaning into the Jack Sparrow of it all, the Pirates franchise could actually embrace what made those first three movies so damn special. Especially since the fifth movie discounted so much of her growth — you’re telling me that Pirate King Elizabeth Swann, who already went to hell and back for Will Turner, wouldn’t immediately get on a ship and sail with him to the ends of the Earth?

Alas, we might never see Margot Robbie and her crew sail the seven seas. Maybe one day, in the distant future, beyond the horizon, Disney will realize that the key to cracking that franchise after two meh sequels is just making it unapologetically tailored towards girls.Robbie told Vanity Fair that she had been working on the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie for some time, but the project never really set sail because Disney seemingly decided not to move forward with it.

We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would've been really cool, Robbie explained. But I guess they don't want to do it.

Margot Robbie Says Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Is Dead In The Water

It was announced in 2020 that Robbie would be the star of a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson. The Robbie-led feature was not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise but rather an original story with new characters.

Pirates franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer was said to be on board to produce both this movie and a second new Pirates movie that was reported to be in the works with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. There hasn't been any word on whether Mazin's reboot is still going ahead.

Bruckheimer confirmed this year that two scripts were being developed for a new movie in the Pirates franchise — one with Robbie, and one without her. He didn't reveal who the star of the other movie would be, but suggested the future is yet to be decided for Johnny Depp.

It was reported in 2020 that a sixth film was in the works, with a predominantly female cast led by Margot Robbie.

Robbie responded to the reports months later with a cheeky tease, but not much has been said since then. Of course, many people are wondering if Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a future film. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now spoken out on the subject.

While Bruckheimer is currently focused on promoting Top Gun: Maverick, he is also working on a number of other projects. And it appears that this includes Pirates of the Caribbean content from Disney.

Pirates Of The Caribbean Producer Gives Update On Margot Robbie's Movie

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Bruckheimer confirmed that the studio is currently working on two screenplays, one with and one without the Birds of Prey star. When asked if the Jack Sparrow actor would return for the sequel, the producer said Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.

Pirates

Fans had mixed feelings about the prospect of Margot Robbie directing a Pirates film. While some appeared to support it, others claimed that the series could not continue without Johnny Depp in the lead role.

While Jerry Bruckheimer didn't completely dismiss the possibility, it doesn't appear to be a foregone conclusion. And it doesn't appear that Depp is keen on donning his pirate hat once more at this time.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Margot Robbie Set To Star In New Movie

During the legal proceedings, Depp has stated that he has no desire to reprise his famous role, despite the fact that he has apparently never seen the films. He also revealed that he had ideas for how to end Sparrow's story before leaving the major IP.

Despite his lack of interest in returning, fans continue to campaign for his return. A petition in support of the cause garnered over 100, 000 signatures earlier this year, and now it has new life thanks to this latest legal case.

Former Pirates co-stars have also come out in support of the actor, believing that he should be allowed to reprise his Oscar-nominated role.
