Margot Robbie The Big Short

The easiest way to explain something complicated to people is to have Margot Robbie spell it out while sitting in a bubble bath. That’s just science. So when the beautiful Suicide Squad star was tasked with explaining the point of Red Nose Day, she leaned on a trick Adam McKay taught her for his Oscar-winning The Big Short: She got naked and slipped into the tub:

This skit was part of NBC’s Red Nose Day Special, a fundraiser that featured appearances by Ellen DeGeneres, Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, Sarah Silverman, Tracy Morgan, Key & Peele, Anna Kendrick, Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Ellie Kemper, amongst many, many others. But the winner, in my opinion, was Robbie, who continued to prove that she has stellar comedic timing, and she knows how to wring a few more laughs out of a good joke. As she explains, about Red Nose Day:

Margot

So, a lot of people have been asking what Red Nose Day is about, and it seems the best place -- for reasons that are very hard to understand -- that the best place for me to answer this is in the bathtub. … [Red Nose Day] has everything to do with raising money and making people laugh, and it has absolutely nothing to do with bathtubs, shampoo, conditioner, soap, champagne, or nudity.

Then, in an effort to make people laugh, she pulled a basketball and a rubber chicken out of the water. Thankfully, she didn’t pull a rat out of the water. That’s what her Suicide Squad co-star Jared Leto might have attempted.

The clip ended with Margot Robbie getting a surprise visitor in her tub. Couldn’t he at least have put a Red Nose on?

Red Nose Day is a fundraiser, a charitable effort led by celebrities that raises awareness and money for children around the globe. Meant to be a form of charitable entertainment, the group claims to have raised funds for such organizations as Boys and Girls Club of America, Feeding America, National Urban League, Covenant House and Charity: Water. Hey, speaking of water, has anyone told Margot Robbie she can get out of the tub yet? She probably looks like a prune by now.

I'm guessing most of you still don't know what really happened? Yeah, you've got a soundbite you repeat so you don't sound dumb but c'mon.

Based on the prize-winning 2010 book by acclaimed author Michael Lewis, the highly entertaining film is Hollywood's best attempt yet to bring the story of the global economic meltdown to the masses.

It doesn't hurt to have Gosling, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Steve Carell to make sense of the seemingly dry material – even if they do play the key characters in the creation of the credit default swap market who sought to bet against the collateralized debt obligation (CDO) bubble and profit from the financial crisis.

The film has already sparked debate about financial innovation in the United States and been linked to democratic-socialist Bernie Sanders' bid for US president.

It wasn't until I read Michael Lewis' book that I really was able to get to the bottom of the rabbit hole to understand what went so wrong, Pitt told Variety, amid his calls for more financial regulation.

The Big Short (film)

No doubt it will be a hot topic at next week's World Economic Forum in Davos, including by chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Greg Medcraft, who is about to be handed unfettered powers to ban financial products in our market which already has the financial service sector on edge.

And the film will be leapt on by politicians like Labour Senator Sam Dastyari and the Greens who enjoy holding bad business to account.

The

Part of the film's success – and the reason it is raising questions among the broader public who normally remain disengaged from the world of high-finance – is director Adam McKay's storytelling technique of breaking the fourth wall to make a mockery of Wall Street's jargon, including using Margot Robbie in a bubble bath to explain sub-prime loans and shorting and using world-renowned chef Anthony Bourdain to cut-up fish heads to explain CDOs.

Mortgage-backed securities; sub-prime loans, tranches; it's pretty confusing right? Does it make you feel bored or stupid? Well; it's supposed to. Wall Street loves to use confusing terms to make you think only they can do what they can do or even better for you to just leave them the f--- alone, Gosling's character explains.

The thought-provoking film is a timely reminder of the lessons from a financial crisis which are too quickly forgotten. It is worth bearing in mind, however, the next crisis is likely to emerge from a host of new threats – a fact reflected by the subject of Lewis' 2014 book Flash Boys about high frequency trading and dark pools – rather than the causes of the last crisis.

That means our politicians, regulators, media and investors need the flexibility, vigilance, financial literacy and foresight to always be on-guard against our next black swan event without stifling the innovation which can deliver such valuable benefits to the community. What The Hell Is Happening On Wall Street? Trevor Noah Explains The Gamestop Stock Surge As Margot Robbie In The Big Short

The Internet blew up the week with the drama going on between Wall Street hedge funds and Reddit users over GameStop stock.

A short squeeze, which is a rapid increase in the price of a stock owing primarily to technical factors in the market rather than underlying fundamentals, resulted in a 500% increase in the gaming retailer’s stock price over the course of several weeks, reaching an all-time intraday high of nearly $500 as of January 28, causing large losses for short sellers. The rush to cover these positions only drove the price higher. Part of this effect was attributed to small investors having been organising within the Reddit community r/wallstreetbets, with some aiming to cause as much financial damage as possible to large financial institutions. According to CNN, Tesla CEO Elon Musk appeared to join the pile-on with a tweet that sent GameStop shares soaring. His one-word comment — “Gamestonk!!” — was all it took to cheer on the the popular Reddit page that’s been generating most of the hype around the stock. Gamsetop is now valued at $33.7 billion, larger than many companies in the S&P 500.

Starring Steve Carrell, Brad Pitt, and Ryan Gosling, the 2015 film consists of three separate but concurrent stories, loosely connected by their actions in the years leading up to the 2007 housing market crash.
