Is Margot Robbie Going To Play Harley Quinn Again

Margot Robbie is looking to take a break from the Harley Quinn character. The actress said so herself during the pre-launch marketing campaign for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is just a couple of weeks away from release. It will have a huge mountain to climb in order to beat Marvel's latest cinematic effort, Black Widow. The Scarlett Johansson-led movie scooped over $200 million in its opening weekend and is guaranteed to become the most successful box office release since the beginning of the pandemic.

The DCEU's answer is The Suicide Squad - a soft reboot of 2016's film of (almost) the same name. One of the few returning stars for the new adventure of Task Force X is Margot Robbie. Her portrayal of Harley Quinn is among the very few positive things about 2016's Suicide Squad. However, fans of Margot, Harley and the DCEU will be disappointed to find out that the actress is looking for a break from the DC character.

Why Margot Robbie Isn't Playing Harley Quinn In Joker 2

Margot Robbie has been all Harley Quinn for the last two years. Before filming for The Suicide Squad began, the Australian actress was busy with another DCEU release: Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

Filming these two immense projects back-to-back has taken its toll on Robbie, who is now seeking a break from the baseball bat-wielding lover of the Joker.

It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley, because she's exhausting. I don't know when we're next going to see her. I'm just as intrigued as everyone else is.

That last bit makes it clear that this apparent hiatus is in part due to the DCEU's own schedule of releases and Margot Robbie's uncertainty of when exactly her services are going to be required again.

Nevertheless, with Birds of Prey coming out last year and The Suicide Squad this year, DC Studios should give Margot some breathing room before Harley's inevitable return to the big screen.Director James Gunn blasted back onto the comic book movie scene in 2021 with his work on the reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Movies, Robbie also has her own solo film under her belt in Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,  and her portrayal is still widely popular considering what DC has on the table in the present day.

The big question now, with so much up in the air for the DC universe, is when exactly fans will see Robbie return to one of her most iconic roles. Well, if James Gunn has anything to say about it, it will hopefully be sooner rather than later.

There isn’t another Suicide Squad movie on the books (not publicly, at least), and Harley Quinn is set to come back with Lady Gaga reportedly playing the role in Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker sequel. Looking even further, the entire DCEU slate is in a state of flux due to the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, meaning the DCEU’s Harley Quinn could be put on the back burner until things are more settled.

Margot Robbie Needs A Break From 'exhausting' Harley Quinn

Regardless, seeing Gunn promote Robbie’s anti-hero can only be a good sign as the studio works out the path for the DCEU’s future. While Robbie may currently be on a break from playing this role, there are plenty of fans and professionals out there who hope to see her come without too long of a wait.
