Margot Robbie Disney Movie

Back in August, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that a sixth entry to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is happening, thus further cementing Robbie's involvement and eventual takeover.

However, it seems that the hype surrounding The Suicide Squad star's involvement with Disney's pirate-centric franchise has died down after a new report of its unfortunate development.

Disney

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie opened up about the female-led spin-off of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that she was set to star in.

Robbie confirmed she had previously been developing it for a while but Disney doesn't want to do it, meaning that the planned feature film will no longer be moving forward.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess [Disney] don’t want to do it.

“Her superpower and the thing that makes her a once-in-a-generation talent is that she can do everything. If you watch Margot learn a new skill, it’s pretty terrifying. When we did stunts for Birds of Prey, the stunt teams would show something to her once. She tries it once, and by the second time, she’s better than them.”

Reinvention Of

“People have got strong feelings. I’d much rather that than indifference. Now, let me subvert your expectations. It’s much scarier, but it’s also a great place to begin.”

Vanity Fair pointed out in its feature that Robbie is a true working producer, with the actress attending preproduction meetings, being present on set, and even getting yelled at by agents.

When the outlet noted that many actors who get producer credits don't do any producing, Robbie admitted that it pissed [her] off:

Pirates Of The Caribbean' Movie Starring Margot Robbie No Longer Happening At Disney

In the early stages of every project, Robbie has been kept off email chains or not invited to calls because some people reportedly assume that the producer credit is just a vanity title for her:

“Then everyone realizes after a few months, ‘Oh, she actually is a producer, but even still, people direct all the money questions at my producing partners, never at me. And so many times Tom and Josey have to say, ‘She’s the one to ask, actually.’ ”Is the Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise Gone?

This unfortunate development about Margot Robbie's Pirates of the Caribbean movie could hint that trouble is brewing within the franchise, but it's likely that this setback doesn't mean that the Pirates name is completely dead under the Disney banner.

Margot Robbie Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Canceled At Disney

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has earned $4.5 billion worldwide, making it the 15th highest-grossing film series of all time. This essentially means that the House of Mouse would be smart not to end it any time soon, with the studio presumably mapping out plans to properly expand it first before officially announcing their plans.

Losing a bonafide star like Robbie definitely hurts, but it's possible that her other commitments (DC-related) combined with a potential comeback for Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow could've complicated the plans for the spin-off.

Disney

Still, this doesn't mean that Robbie will not be part of any Disney-related project in the future, considering the actress' impressive resume. It's reasonable to assume that Disney has plans for the actress to star in one of the studio's projects someday, and they could be simply finding the right opportunity.

Margot Robbie Could Lead New 'pirates Of The Caribbean' Movie: Johnny Depp's Future On Hold

For now, it seems that Robbie will be busy with DC Studios as new CEO James Gunn appears to be set on pushing Harley Quinn at the forefront. It's been five long years since Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in theaters, but that's not to say that Disney hasn't been trying to continue the franchise in pursuit of further box office gold.

Back in 2020, DC darling Margot Robbie was reportedly set to headline Pirates of the Caribbean 6 in place of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow.

However, when asked about the Disney film in November, Robbie's reply suggested that Pirates 6 had been canceled, saying, I guess [Disney] didn't want to do it.

But now, it sounds as if the film has been let out of Davy Jones' locker if it was ever there in the first place.

Despite Margot Robbie's claim that Disney canceled Pirates of the Caribbean 6, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is still alive for Disney.

Margot

When asked why Pirates 6 has been such a struggle, Bruckheimer admitted that they're all hard but two films, including one with Robbie, are actually in the works:

Margot Robbie Confirms 'pirates Of The Caribbean' Spinoff Is Not Happening

Oh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully, we’ll get both of them.

In regard to why Robbie said the sixth film had been canceled, Bruckheimer was confident in the opposite being true, saying, We believed we'll get it made:

It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.

Since two Pirates films are on the way, Bruckheimer claims that he can't answer the question of whether Disney could bring Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow:

You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know. I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.

Margot

As to whether Captain Jack's own tale could come to an end in a future film, the producer was equally coy, saying, You can’t. We tried to kill him. It didn’t work.

Margot Robbie Joins Disney For Movie Based On Disneyland Ride

For fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise - and Margot Robbie - Bruckheimer's update is fantastic news, but there's quite a bit to unpack here.

Does that mean Robbie's not the new face of the franchise and will only lead one film? After all, a film with a young cast suggests a reboot. If Robbie was the star of the reboot, a new young cast wouldn't be the focus.

Bruckheimer also suggested that Robbie's film may not be Pirates 6 but actually Pirates 7, saying, I'm sure she was disappointed it didn't go first and it might be a blessing to push this a bit.

Margot Robbie's 'pirates Of The Caribbean' Movie Scrapped At Disney

If Robbie truly believed her film had been canceled, perhaps it was due to Disney not knowing which film should come first.

However, the results of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's trial and his potential to return surely shook things up a bit as well. After all, it's no secret that the actor loved the character and wanted to continue making Pirates films.

Margot

While only time will tell, the fact that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is still alive is significant news. The question moving forward is just how many captains will be sailing on this ship?
