Why Isn'T Margot Robbie Playing Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie has portrayed Harley Quinn three times in the last five years, beginning in 2016's Suicide Squad. She was given a more solo experience in 2020's Bird of Prey and she returns once again in the upcoming release of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. While Robbie has certainly enjoyed playing the character, the actress admits that she doesn't know how long it will be before she portrays her next.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Robbie got pretty candid about playing Harley Quinn and expressed how she was ready to take a break from playing the psychiatrist-turned-vigilante. While admitting that she has no plans to reprise her DCEU character in the near future, Robbie said, I was like, 'Oof, I need a break from Harley, because she's exhausting.' I don't know when we're next going to see her.

Even though Robbie may need a break from the character, the actress admitted that she's just as intrigued as everyone else is about Harley Quinn's future. Robbie has many projects on the horizon that will keep her busy as she hits the brakes on Harley Quinn. Robbie will be playing Barbie herself in Greta Gerwig's live-action film and she also has Damien Chazelle's Babylon, Ruin, and the much-buzzed-about untitled David O. Russell project. Why Margot Robbie As Harley Quinn Isn't A Stretch

“As for Harley Quinn, we already knew that Warner Bros. and Margot Robbie were planning to take a break with the character. I told you I heard because they wanted to see how she was received here, and well now they are starting to see. If she comes back, I do think there will be changes to how she interprets the character. I would love to see her work with a better director. I think this is a character who would benefit from a female director, to be honest with you, although Patty Jenkins really messed up on Wonder Woman… This all goes back to the choice that it was… even Margot Robbie admitted that she had… Warner Bros. gave her a choice, does she wants to make a Birds of Prey movie or a Gotham City Sirens movie? They never should have given her that choice because she should have made a Gotham City Sirens movie, and she chose poorly! She chose the wrong path, and she is continuing to suffer for it.

Now here’s the concern, Warner Bros. could use the Multiverse as an excuse to flow it out another live-action Harley Quinn. If they decide to do that, then Margot Robbie will be in real trouble.
